If you're a homeowner in Pasco or Pinellas County starting to think about a countertop replacement, you'll find no shortage of options — and no shortage of conflicting information about which material is best, what things should cost, and how the process works.
We've been installing countertops in Tampa Bay kitchens and bathrooms since 1968 from our showroom in Holiday. Here's what we'd tell you if you walked in today.
The Three Materials That Matter Most
There are plenty of countertop materials on the market — laminate, concrete, butcher block, porcelain — but for Florida homeowners doing a kitchen or bath update, three materials account for the vast majority of what we install: quartz, granite, and quartzite. Understanding what each one actually is helps cut through a lot of the confusion.
Quartz
Engineered stone — roughly 90–95% ground quartz mineral bound with polymer resins. Manufactured, so it comes in a consistent range of colors and patterns. Non-porous, which means it never needs sealing and won't absorb stains, bacteria, or liquids.
Quartz is our most popular material, and for most Pasco County homeowners it's the right choice: low maintenance, highly durable, and available in a wide range of looks including convincing marble-style patterns. We keep samples in the showroom.
Typical installed cost: $50–$120+ per sq ft depending on brand and edge profile.
Granite
Natural stone quarried from the earth. Every slab is genuinely unique — the patterns, veining, and color variation can't be replicated in an engineered product. Porous, so it requires periodic sealing (roughly once a year for most granites).
Granite handles heat better than quartz and has a character that some homeowners specifically want. If the idea of a surface no one else has appeals to you, and you don't mind the minor maintenance of annual sealing, granite is a excellent material. We source it through quality stone yards.
Typical installed cost: $40–$100+ per sq ft. Exotic or rare granites can exceed quartz pricing.
Quartzite
A natural stone (not to be confused with quartz) that forms when sandstone is subjected to intense heat and pressure. Harder and denser than marble, with a similar aesthetic — dramatic veining, movement, and depth that engineered products can't fully replicate.
Quartzite is the choice for homeowners who love the look of marble but want better durability. It's typically the most expensive of the three options and requires sealing like granite. If you've seen a kitchen that stopped you in your tracks, there's a good chance it had quartzite countertops.
Typical installed cost: $60–$150+ per sq ft depending on slab rarity and complexity.
"The single biggest mistake homeowners make with countertops is choosing from website photos. Colors, veining, and texture look completely different in person — particularly with natural stone. Come see samples before you decide."
What the Installation Process Actually Looks Like
One of the most common questions we get is: once I pick the material, what happens next? Here's the process we walk every customer through.
Showroom Visit & Material Selection
You come in, see samples in person alongside your cabinet choices, and make a decision you're confident in. For natural stone, we can also show you photos of specific slabs available at our stone yards — though you'd see the actual slab before anything is cut.
In-Home Measurement & Template
We schedule a template appointment at your home. Precise measurements are taken of your actual countertop area — cutouts for sinks, faucet holes, edge profiles, and any custom shapes are all captured at this stage.
Fabrication
The template goes to fabrication. Your chosen material is cut to your exact specifications — edge profiles applied, sink cutouts made. For quartz this is typically 7–10 days. Natural stone timing varies by material availability.
Installation
Installation of a standard kitchen countertop typically takes a few hours. Old countertops are removed, new surfaces are set and secured, and final seaming (if any) is done on-site. We clean up when done.
Final Walkthrough
We walk through the finished installation with you. Any concerns are addressed before we leave. For natural stone, we'll review care and maintenance including sealing schedule.
What Drives the Cost Up or Down
Countertop pricing isn't complicated once you understand what the variables are. Here's what moves the number:
- Square footage — this is the primary driver. More countertop surface means more material and more installation time.
- Material choice — quartz entry-level is cheaper than most natural stone, but premium quartz brands overlap with mid-range granite. Rare quartzite can be significantly more expensive than anything else.
- Edge profile — eased or beveled edges are standard pricing. Ogee, waterfall, or highly detailed profiles add cost.
- Cutout complexity — a standard undermount sink cutout is included. Multiple cutouts, unusual shapes, or cooktop cutouts add time.
- Waterfall islands — a countertop that runs vertically down the side of an island requires additional material and more precise seaming. Beautiful, but it adds cost.
The best way to get an accurate number for your specific kitchen is an in-home measurement. We can give you a rough range in the showroom, but the actual quote requires seeing your space — countertop area, sink configuration, and any special requirements.
Florida-Specific Considerations
A few things that are more relevant in Tampa Bay than in other parts of the country:
Humidity and natural stone sealing
Florida's ambient humidity means natural stone surfaces — particularly granite and quartzite — should be sealed on schedule. A properly sealed surface resists moisture absorption well, but neglecting sealing in a humid climate causes more visible problems than it would in a drier region. If you choose natural stone, we'll give you a specific maintenance schedule for the material you select.
Outdoor kitchens
Outdoor kitchen countertops are increasingly popular in Florida — and the material choices are different than indoors. Porcelain is often a better outdoor choice than quartz (UV exposure can affect quartz resin over time) or natural stone (freeze-thaw isn't a concern here, but direct sun and rain are). If you're thinking about an outdoor kitchen counter, mention it and we'll steer you toward the right materials.
Resale value in Pasco and Pinellas
The Tampa Bay housing market has shifted significantly over the past several years — and kitchen quality is one of the most visible indicators buyers use to assess a home. Quartz or granite countertops are now close to expected, not exceptional, in Pasco and Pinellas County homes priced above $350,000. Laminate countertops in that price range actively hurt resale. If you're planning to sell in the next 5–10 years, countertop quality is worth investing in.
Our Recommendation for Most Pasco County Homeowners
Quartz for the kitchen — it handles Florida's climate, daily cooking, and busy households with minimal upkeep. Granite or quartzite if you want natural stone character and don't mind the maintenance. Come see samples in our Holiday showroom before you commit to anything. The 15-minute drive from New Port Richey or 20 minutes from Clearwater is worth it — countertops are a decision you'll look at every day for the next 20 years.
